Assemble Sound’s Artist Residency Program invites musical artists from a wide range of genres and skillsets to work out of our collaborative recording studio in Detroit for a nine month period.
Artist residents are provided 24/7 access to our recording studio and rehearsal space, hands-on critique and professional development with other artists and Assemble Sound staff, and access to exclusive resident programming. The residency program is intended for musical artists -- including songwriters, vocalists, engineers, music producers and performing artists -- who are focused full-time on their craft, have demonstrated experience, and have a vision for their own progress.
The purpose of the residency is exposing artists to our development practices, giving them access to people and resources that they can leverage to become better people, artists, and music business-owners. Our residency exemplifies our belief in the transformative power of independent artist-to-artist collaboration and cooperation.
How Are Residents Chosen?
New residents are chosen by a combination of Assemble Sound staff and existing residents. While criteria is extremely varied, at a high level we are looking for development-oriented artists who contribute to the quality, diversity, and integrity of both the music and community being cultivated at Assemble Sound.
Artist in Residency I:
Artists entering this program are seeking to develop their unique voice, as well as the soft skills associated with being a creative professional. You will be provided focused attention and feedback on the foundational elements of music production: songwriting, use of technology, forming working partnerships, etc.
Artist in Residency II:
Artist in Residence II participants have a solid understanding of their sound and understand what goes into expanding it. They also have a vision for what success looks like for them as an artist. This program is offered to help an artist understand the business of music and how they can more strategically work towards their vision.
Resident Alumni have continued access to the space and programming, although that access is prioritized below residents and not required.
FEEDBACK: Artist residents meet bi-monthly with Studio Director to establish artist goals and measure progress.
DEDICATION TO PRACTICE: Artist in Residence participants are expected to be working on site no less than 20 hours per week.
EDUCATION: Attend monthly Assemble U events as well as all song critiques during residency..
CARE OF SPACE: Artist residents are expected to collectively keep the building organized, safe, and clean. Negligence will not be tolerated.
PROFESSIONALISM: Assemble Sound is a work space. Show up on time and ready to work.
A residency last for nine months, and may be renewed for an additional residency term at the discretion of the artist and Assemble Sound.
Residencies formally begin, renew, and end on nine-month cycles starting January 2018. Applications are accepted around the year.
